You start your fire by placing large pieces of wood on the bottom and then place the kindling on top. It is the total opposite of what most people do when starting a fire. You just light it at the top, and the fire will gradually burn down the layers.
If you have a stove which is multi-fuel and you are burning smokeless coal, this needs an air supply from beneath the grate, so you should make sure that the grate is clear from ash and that the ash pan is also empty.
First of all place your main fuel (Logs or Coal) on the grate to create your base layer. Next, open all the air vents and the flue damper.
Then you add the kindling (small sticks of wood or bark) over the top criss-crossed, leaving gaps for the air and flames to get through. Next, lay a few bigger pieces of kindling on top.
Next using firelighters or newspaper, (Or Both). Start by scrunching a few newspaper sheets into ball shapes, then break a few firelighters up and spread them out.
Finally light the newspaper/firelighters in a few places and close the door.
When the fuel is burning properly, you can turn the air supply down slightly by closing the bottom vent. Do this gradually as the fire improves but try to keep good flames going and don't let the fire smoulder.
When the fire is fully ablaze, slightly close the vent that controls air at the top of the stove - never shut this fully as your stove's flue system needs air from above to keep the glass clean
The crucial thing is to produce a good, strong flame, a fire that produces flame, produces minimal smoke, the flame is a sign of good heat, which helps keep your chimney warm allowing it to constantly pull air through the stove.
More flame and less smoke also protects the stove parts and liner from damage from the smoke. It is also much better for the environment.
We also offer seasoned hard wood logs, supplied in bulk or bagged. Nets of kindling are also available to light your fire with ease.
